Niall Farrell Wpt

Niall Farrell took down the 2016 WPT Caribbean, beating 323 competitors at te Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

The $4,560 buy-in main event offered a prize pool of $1,456,892, with some notable names vying for the title.

Some of the big guns that finished in the money included Sam Greenwood in 30th ($10,000), Kristen Bicknell in 29th ($10,000), Akush Mandavia in 27th ($11,500), Christ Hunichen in 24th ($13,000), Ari Engel in 22nd ($13,000), Manig Loeser in 20th ($14,500), and Keven Stammen in 8th ($42,000).

Six players made it to the final table and after a series of eliminations, Niall and Troy Quenneville were left to fight it out for the title. However, the heads-up duel produced the winner in the very first hand. Both players went all-in with Farrell’s A-5 up against the K-J of Quenneville.

The board didn't throw up any surprises, to seal the deal in favour of Niall. On the other hand, Quenneville had to settle for a second place finish for $220,000

“I was one of those kids you would find drinking Mad Dog behind a skip and yet would manage to get straight A’s. If you develop this habit of not working hard, and you feel no pain, it breeds a lazy mentality. It’s one of the things that attracted me to poker. If you are smart, it doesn’t feel like work. It attracts young guys who can’t be assed doing anything but want to make a lot of money at the same time,” said Farrell after the win.

Final Table Results:

1: Niall Farrell $335,000
2: Troy Quenneville $220,000
3: Anthony Augustino $140,000
4: Colin Moffatt $105,392
5: Yiannis Liperis $80,000
6: Stephen Woodhead $66,000

Sam Trickett Partypoker

Partypoker have signed their second big name in recent months after Sam Trickett put pen to paper to become the latest brand ambassador of the site.

In October, the partypoker has secured the services of Jackie Glazier for a similar role.

After Sam’s addition, the partypoker roster now boasts of Mike Sexton, Roberto Romanello, and Tony Dunst.

“I am proud to be joining the expanding partypoker team and represent the brand globally. partypoker was always my first site and I am excited about the direction the company is taking, with the players and a fun feel at the forefront of their minds,” Trickett said after the latest development.

Trickett won his first live tournament back in 2007. Since then he hasn’t looked back and registered some memorable performances at the biggest poker events across the globe.

The 30-year-old has not been extremely active on the poker circuit in the last couple of years. However with this new collaboration, Sam’s fans will hope to see him at all the premier poker events.

Talking about their new ambassador, Tom Waters, Group Head of partypoker, stated:

“It is testament to the recent success of partypoker that such a renowned player like Sam was eager to join the team. Sam will be a great addition to partypoker, hosting new and exciting high stakes cash games on the site, that I’m sure will make great viewing for the players.”

Germany Gambling Laws

Germany has proposed a spate of changes to its national gambling laws in order to adhere to the European Union rules.

Law firm DLA Piper stated that the draft ‘Second State Treaty Amending the State Treaty on Gambling’ will look to address issues that have been raised on numerous occasions by the European Court of Justice.

The newly drafted changes however does not include any enforcement against unlicensed gambling or regulation of online casinos.

The State Treaty on Gambling however won’t come into play until January 2018 at the earliest.

Official statement of law firm, DLA Piper read:

“The interim measure of getting orders of approval for sports betting will become more relevant until the concession procedure is realigned by the new State Treaty.

“Also, the Federal Administrative Court of Germany ruled in a recent decision that if the state monopoly for sports betting persists an administrative prohibition of sports betting without a German sports betting concession would be unlawful.

“This decision ties in with a recent decision of the European Court of Justice; there the ECJ ruled that a criminal prosecution of a sports betting intermediate is contrary to EU law if the licensing process for private sports betting organisers has been held to not conform with EU law by national courts.”

Pokerstars Logo

One of the biggest criticisms of PokerStars, post its takeover by Amaya, has been that of its VIP progam. After the progam was revamped, several grinders even threatened boycott of the site. The woes of these players are now set to continue as the world's biggest online poker site has now sent another mail to its players with regards to this issue.

Earlier in 2016, PokerSars indicated that its new rewards offering would also include casino and sportsbook. The company has now revealed that players will be allowed to earn StarCoins across these products.

As on January 1, 2017, inactive players (six months) at PokerStars are set to lose their StarCoins that they had previously amassed.

Another downside of the new policy is that Supernova status will be determined on a monthly and not yearly basis. This means the player will have a tough time in achieveing this status going forward. Players will now need 20% more VPPs each month to breach the Supernova barrier.

Considering the backlash faced by the site last time around, it now decided to give the gringers a two-month advance notice before the new scheme comes into effect.

Furthermore, players who have already achieved Supernova in 2016 will retain their status until whenever the new rewards program is actual launched next year.

“We are committed to keeping you updated as the details are finalized, and want to share with you what we can, when we can,” read a part of the email from PokerStars.

It remains to be seen how the players react this time. PokerStars is certainly changing its operating model and trying to appeal to a wider recreational audience.

The company wants to attract more players and shed the tag of site that is favored by the big boys.

Erik Sagstrom

Just like Gus Hansen, poker legend Erik Sagstrom too made a victorious return to the table with a win in Las Vegas.

From 2004 to 2007, there was no stopping the Swedish poker pro. In 2005, he made a killing by selling the PokerChamps online poker room for a whopping €18 million.

Considering he has stayed away from the poker scene for quite some time now, Erik’s win at the $5,300 NLHE High Roller for $65,000 came as quite a surprise.

The event, hosted at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, offered a $130,000 prize pool thanks to the 26 players that participated.

Sagstrom played solid poker to last till the very end, where he beat Joe Kuether for the title.

After the win, the 33-year-old told reporters that he has switched his focus from poker to sports betting in recent years.

“I’ve been doing a little of this and a little of that and then I came [to Vegas]. I wasn’t planning on playing much, but once you’re here, you get sucked in. Life is crazy and the degenerate that I am, I play all the time now,” he said.

Post his latest win, Sagstrom intends to play a lot more poker tournaments going forward, which is excellent news for poker fans.
